GodwinGroup recently worked with the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership on a sales tax referendum voted on January 14. Jackson city residents overwhelmingly approved the measure, with 90% voting in favor of a 1% sales tax increase on certain purchases.
The sales tax increase is expected to generate needed funding to repair the deteriorating Jackson water system, streets and drainage. As part of the Chamber’s communications support team, GodwinGroup designed and launched the 1percentmakessense.com website, provided consultation on messaging and handled media relations.
“As a Jackson-based business, this was a project near and dear to us,” said Philip Shirley, Chairman and CEO of GodwinGroup. “We were proud to be part of the effort of getting the word out, and prouder still of the Jacksonians who recognized the importance of addressing the infrastructure needs of our city.”
Some of the city’s water lines are at least 100 years old, and in recent years have been the cause of service interruptions and boil water notices. City officials will soon begin the process of replacing the aging water lines, along with making needed improvements to streets and drainage.
Referendums on a tax increase rarely garner 90 percent, but Shirley noted, “This just signifies how great the need was, and it also shows that the people who live and work in Jackson know and understand this needed to be done.”
